When I was putting a title on the page I did not whether to put up the capital ‘Reykjavik’ or just leave it as Iceland. Just because the country is so small its hard to believe anyone would just want a review of the capital. I mean the population is just over 300,000! However, this adds to the character and beauty of Iceland.
When you do visit here, make sure to bring a lot to cover your expenses. Iceland is probably the most expensive country I have ever visited. To show you just how much so I have listed the average cost of your average (daily) expense below;
- Hostel Dorm: 3,500 – 7,500 ISK
- Hotel w/Private Bathroom: 20,000 ISK
- Car Rental: 5,000 ISK
- Single Fare Bus Ride: 3.50 ISK
- Cheap Meal: 1,500 ISK
- Pint of Beer: 1000 ISK
So you see what I mean, nothing comes cheap. Not even a pre-made supermarket sandwich. A few ways around this; use Air BnB for shared accommodation, hitchhike, eat food from service stations and download the Appy Hour app for happy hour beers.
If you an avoid drinking in Iceland do. You will save a fortune. However you might struggle. The bars in Iceland are some of the quirkiest, fun bars you will ever come across. You might find the locals a bit hostile towards tourists at first but they do mingle. A beer on happy hour will usually be 700 ISK and if you plan your night you can beer crawl happy hours for the entire night.
For natural landscape and scenery, not many countries can punch as hard as Iceland. I would definitely recommend hiring a car and camping. it’s the best way to see the volcanic island and experience everything it has to offer (Just check the weather conditions beforehand because the wind can literally move your car in harsh conditions). it simply has too much to see, from waterfalls to glaciers and so much more. Iceland is one of the few countries I have ever visited where I could live happily.
