Berlin

When I first got to Berlin I was a little disappointed. Mainly due to the architecture. The old ‘Communist’ look of tall square grey buildings mainly, and the lack of Bavarian architecture that I had in mind. That is until you get around the city and see what it has to offer.

Berlins old turbulent image remains in tact but the people have changed, this is now the capital for students and ravers. The city hosts some of the most diverse people I ever seen in one city, boosting the cultural values here. Maybe the old derelict look of Berlin remains as reminder of the dark past and not to make the bad decisions our previous have made? (look at me being all philosophical)

The longer you stay in Berlin, the more it will grow on you. The history, ‘quirkiness’ and vibrant young people of this city is infectious.

Berlin

Berlin is a great destination for backpackers. Not only being super affordable, but also providing excellent amenities and things to do. The thing that bothered me about Berlin is the enormous size of the city and how spread out it is. Meaning using public transportation is a must. Some of the average costs of Berlin are listed here below;

  • Hostel Dorms: €10 – €20 EUR
  • Food: ‘Currywurst stands’ – €4 / ‘Pizza by the slice stands’ – €2 / ‘Sit down restaurant’ – €15 EUR
  • Transportation: Get a day pass for zones AB – €7 EUR

If you are seriously on a budget look no further than the lunchtime specials during the week in Oranienburgerstr. You can get a starter and main course in very nice restaurants for around €5 EUR
