First things first; travel insurance is vital. No one knows when they are going to need it. For a long time I always had this attitude of ‘I never need a doctor’, but travel insurance covers so much more than just medical purposes. It covers when you are robbed or when you lose items, or worse, when a family member dies and you have to get home asap.
Travel insurance can save you on a huge hospital bill when you are abroad, and for only a few bob it’s worth the hassle. I never had to use travel insurance yet (touch wood), but it is better to be safe than sorry.
When getting travel insurance you have to know that what is not covered is every bit as important as what is covered. If any of these ten bullet points are not covered I would recommend not choosing that insurer.
- High Coverage Limit
- Emergency Evacuation
- Covers Most Countries in the World
- Cancellations (eg flights, hotels)
- Natural Disasters/War Forcing You To Go Home Early
- 24/7 Emergency Care
- Lost/Stolen Possessions
- Sudden Injury/Illness
- Personal Liability Cover
- Loss of Passport (cover to replace)
And remember, that no matter how good the insurance company is, they will try not to pay out. So have all necessary documents safe in preparation for this.
