First thing first, you should know Quito is a huge city! unfortunately its largely inaccessible also due to public transport. However as a backpacker you would probably be only concerned with staying the north side of the capital. However, the historical side of Quito lies in the south side.

Quito left me with unsure feelings. While there is not a lot to do in the city, apart from sight see the countless churches, it is positioned in the perfect place for excursions and day trips. Such as the Cotopaxi volcano.

I highly recommend staying in the Secret Garden Hostel. It provides excellent views of the city when your legs tire from climbing Quito’s hills.

Here is a list of the typical average costs in Quito. (NB. Ecuador uses the American Dollar)

  • Hostel Dorm: $10 USD
  • Food: Market – $4 USD  /  Restaurant – $15 USD
  • transportation: Bus one-way $0.25 USD
  • Pint of Beer: $2 USD
