New York

Here we are, The Big Apple. A city made iconic by its history of immigration, the shadowing skyscrapers, and the infamous Wall Street. Surely a city on everyone’s bucket list. I have been lucky enough to have seen this city, and during the 4th of July! Known as ‘the city that never sleeps’, it lives true to its reputation, with Broadway classics, sightseeing, and nightclubs that run into the early hours.

New York can be expensive, costing around $5-$7 USD for a pint of beer and an average meal costing $10-$15 USD. I pity you if you smoke, because the taxing system here means a box of cigarettes can cost $15 USD.

If you are on a budget, stay in the Holiday Inn in Parsippany, New Jersey. A quick bus ride into Times Square and huge savings (I was there during Independence Day so accommodation prices skyrocketed).

Make sure to make the most of public transport during your time here, it is relatively inexpensive and will save you time and stress navigating this immense city. A seven day unlimited MetroCard will cost you $31 USD, or $2.75USD for a local bus/subway ride.

New York is also known as the most diverse city in the world, with over 800 recognised languages spoken in the city, and possessing the largest Chinese population of any city in the world outside of Asia. Which is good news for all foodies because the selection is endless.

New York is the most populous city in the United States, so be prepared to be pushed and shoved off the foothpath/sidewalk when you get there, especially when you hear 60 million tourists visited the city in 2015! However, ignore what you have heard about ‘New Yorkers’, from my experience I found them to be a helpful bunch, especially when you get lost on the Subway
